Axe is one of my favourite heroes in dota1 and playing with it is really enjoyable because you can be both tank and attacker .
Also it is a good hero for new players because playing with it is not that much hard and he will not die easily so you can learn all the parts of the game .

Axe levels Dota1

It will give 150/250/300 magical damage to enemies but if the enemy ‘s hp is less than 250/325/400 Axe will kill him instantly and after that he and nearby allies will gain 30% movement speed and attack speed for 6 seconds .

We pick tank items for axe because his main job is being a tank and after that he can be a little attacker too . so your first item can be Vanguard .
And after that you can buy blade mail to defend yourself against the attacker heroes .
Now you are a real tank , specially in the first of the game .
pick power treads boot for becoming more attacker ,
Or tranquil boot for becoming tank
You can pick kelens dagger for axe، to jump among the enemies and use your 1st level , so all of them will attack you and your teammates will have time to kill them all and don’t worry about dying because you have brought your first tank items and you will be so strong .
In this time you need to buy some powerful items which makes your killing impossible .
First one could be heart of tarrasque .
If you have problems with enemy’s magician heroes you need to pick one of the anti-mage items depends on the game situation .
Like linkens sphere
Or black king bar
Or khadgars pipe of insight
After that you can bring assault cuirass , it will make you tank and a little attacker because of it’s attack speed
Now you are a full tank and you only can upgrade your items to become more powerful . for example you can upgrade Vanguard to crimson guard
Or you can bring moon shard and activates it to gain more attack speed

For example at level 10 if you need to be more tank you have to choose +8 strength but if you want to be more attacker you need to choose the attack speed option .
